Works of Man : Matthew Naftzger

This is another project in Stellarvisions portfolio about creating opportunities for artists using smart design, software tools, and social media.

Matthew Naftzger is Works of Man. When he was looking to reinvent his website using content management tools he approached us. We began our work with a series of meetings discussing the artist's approach to his work, how he believed his customers perceived him, and how he wanted Works of Man to be perceived. In our competitive audit we asked Matthew what sites he admired and why.

The Works of Man identity came from a sketchbook drawing of a gear with oddly placed cogs. The typography for the identity signature was humanist and the tagline used copperplate. All of these choices were authentic to his work. A melding of metals, the machine, and the human hand. On the welcome page the gear rotates in a quirky kind of way. Works of Man is about artifacts.

Our visual design took advantage of the rough sketches and details that the artist makes. These drawings create a unique and authentic atmosphere when you visit the site. The drawings are from the artist sketchbook and link to actual pieces where appropriate.

A major goal was to help the artist update his site quickly and easily while maintaining an accurate record of works from an historic perspective. The structure we devised allows him to make a number of selections when he posts a new work. These selections determine how and where the art will appear. We used server side technology to resize and optimize images for web viewing based on criteria required by the design. The artist uploads one size image and it is resized appropriately for each view.

Matthew travels to many art fairs and spends a good amount of time traveling. The content management framework allows him to update his site and blog journal from his laptop or iPhone™.
